The transition to from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 between Dorothy Barley School and Dorothy Barley Junior Academy is a carefully planned process with our children at the very heart of it. Both schools are dedicated to ensuring that pupils acquire the knowledge, skills and ambition for their future and, at Dorothy Barley Infant School, we ensure our children leave us with solid foundations for success as they transition to Key Stage 2.
Curriculum
Both schools implement a curriculum that enables our children to develop into well rounded, happy individuals who have the cultural capital to be able to face all of life’s challenges and opportunities. The curriculums are designed to be progressive and engaging offering a wide range of empowering experiences to support learning. The curriculum at Dorothy Barley Infant School has been carefully crafted to ensure we create the right foundations and building blocks that support the demands and content of the Key Stage 2 curriculum at Dorothy Barley Junior Academy.
Aligned approaches in key aspects of Reading, Writing and Maths ensure our children have a smooth transition at the end of Year 2. Both schools implement Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised which ensures a consistent and progressive approach to the teaching of Reading allowing pupils to learn to read with fluency and foster a love of reading. TalkForWriting, with it’s strong focus on language acquisition and oracy is embedded across the Infant school and key elements of this approach are built upon throughout Key Stage 2. Both schools have implemented a mastery approach to Maths, based on White Rose Maths. This approach has an emphasis on creating a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and ensures that the reasoning and fluency skills developed in Key Stage 1 continue to embed and develop throughout Key Stage 2.
Recognising the importance of providing support for pupils with SEND, both schools work collaboratively to ensure all children, regardless of their individual needs, receive the necessary support to thrive in their educational journey. The SENDCos work closely together to ensure smooth transition for pupils with SEND.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is a shared priority for both schools, particularly given the overlapping families across the settings. Concerns are addressed in accordance with GDPR, and Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) meet regularly to ensure a comprehensive and proactive approach to safeguarding and pupil welfare. Robust systems are in place to facilitate the seamless transition of pupil files and information, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of each pupil.
The transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 is reviewed each year by both schools and is collaborative journey designed to nurture each child’s potential and provide a foundation for lifelong learning and success.
