At Dorothy Barley Infant School, we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. This is why we prioritise early reading and teach it using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We value reading as a crucial life skill and believe that all children should leave our school with a love of reading.

Reading has the highest priority at Dorothy Barley Infant School. We are committed to ensuring that all children become fluent readers by the age of seven, who leave our school with a genuine love of reading.

Our English curriculum is designed to immerse children in a range of language-rich texts and therefore develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, with language acquisition at the heart.
