Nursery | Children are assessed through interactions with nursery staff and observations of play. | |
Reception | Within six weeks of starting school, children participate in the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is a short, interactive and practical assessment of each child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematical skills. At the end of the year, the school reports whether each child has achieved a ‘Good Level of Development’ (GLD). Parents informed of the outcome. | Children are assessed through interactions with staff and observations against the 17 aspects of learning. Termly assessments of phonics and writing. |
Year 1 | Phonics screen – each child works individually with a member of staff to read real and ‘alien’ words. Parents informed of the outcome. | Children are assessed through guided tasks completed with a member of staff. Termly assessment of writing, maths and phonics.

Year 2 | Phonics screen re-sits – for children who were not working at the expected level in Year 1. Parents informed of the outcome. | Termly assessments of reading, writing, maths and phonics. |
