28 Mar Reception Maths – 3D Shapes
Reception have had a busy week learning all about 3D shapes in our Maths lessons and when choosing activities in their learning environment. They practised naming and identifying 3D shapes by matching the shape models with real objects e.g. a sphere and a football. They had a range of hands on activities to help them explore the properties of 3D shapes.
“I know some 3D shapes. They are cylinder, a cube and cone.” – Seth
“These are 3D shapes that I know… a sphere, a cylinder, a cube, a cone and a pyramid.” – David
The children have been keen mathematicians this week carrying out several investigations related to 3D shapes. They were very eager to explore what footprints 3D shapes could make. They did this by printing the 3D shapes into playdough and paint. They were excited to see and record their outcomes!
“We printed shapes to see their footprints. A cube made a square footprint.” – Ivy-Mae
The children also investigated which 3D shapes can roll down a ramp and which cannot. They enjoyed this activity a lot and were happily recording their findings.
“3D shapes slide on one flat face.” – Eric
“Some shapes roll on a curved face.” – Alexia
“Some 3D shapes can slide and some can roll.”
The children also enjoyed building their own towers and castles using 3D shapes. The discussed which shapes stack and which do not. They were challenged to think of and verbalise why they would place a particular shape at the bottom, middle or top of their tower.
Well done Reception!
