Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had another busy week in school! Don’t forget to check the blogs at the end of the newsletter to see what your child has been learning in class!
Parental Engagement

Here at Dorothy Barley, parental engagement is very important to us. We know that all of our children make the best progress when families and school work closely together.
In Oak class this week, we welcomed parents into the classroom to support their child’s learning in English. Together, they explored colourful semantics by building and ordering sentences inspired by our story Billy’s Bucket. The children also enjoyed using the word builder to create descriptive words such as “yellow” and “short,” helping to develop their vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.
Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend!
Year 1 – Phonics
Our Year 1 children have been very busy practising their phonics skills ahead of the Phonic Screening Check in June.
The Phonic Screening Check is a statutory assessment that all children in Year 1 across the country complete. They work with a familiar adult to read 40 words, 20 of which are real words and 20 of which are made-up ‘alien’ words. The children do not realise they are taking a test and they will have many opportunities to practise in the upcoming weeks. If your child is in Year 1, please make sure you are reading with them at home every day as this will really help them to achieve their best!
Further information about the Phonic Screening Check can be found in the document below.

Information about how we teach children to read using our phonics scheme, Little Wandle, can be found here.
Nursery 2026-2027
We are very much looking forward to our new Nursery children joining us in September!
If your child was born between September 2022 and August 2023, they are able to join our Nursery in September. Our Nursery gets the children off to the best possible start to their educational journey and supports them to get ready for Reception. Please ask for an application form from the office to secure a space.
Bank Holiday
School will be closed on Monday as it is a Bank Holiday. The weather is currently looking glorious and we hope you enjoy the long weekend together.
All children should return to school at the usual time on Tuesday morning.
Makaton
As a school, we are learning Makaton as another method of communication. Makaton is a communication programme that uses signs, symbols, and speech to help people communicate effectively, especially those with speech or language difficulties.
Here are the signs we have been learning this week. Scan the QR codes for further information!

Have a lovely weekend!
