Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had another busy week in school! Don’t forget to check the blogs at the end of the newsletter to see what your child has been learning in class!
Junior Duke Update
Our Junior Duke booklets have gone home and many children have already started to complete their challenges! Junior Duke is an life skills award aimed at increasing children’s independence, confidence and resilience by giving them a non-academic platform on which to feel success and achievement. Each year group has a different level of the award and it helps them to develop practical skills that can have a huge positive impact on their lives.
Well done to all of the children who have completed a challenge at home. Congratulations in particular to Reggie and Memona in Woodpecker class who are off to a fantastic start!
VE Day

We have been celebrating VE day today in school! The children all looked wonderful dressed in red, white and blue and we spent some time learning about what VE Day means and why it is celebrated.
This links in with our learning about British Values and how we can display them in everything that we do.
Houses – David Attenborough
In school, children are allocated to one of four houses. They earn points for their house and also complete House Challenges throughout the year.
One of our houses is named after David Attenborough and today we learned that it is his 100th birthday! In assembly, we learned about why David Attenborough is an important individual and how he has inspired us to learn more about animals and care for the world around us.
We really enjoyed watching this video in assembly! What A Wonderful World performed by David Attenborough – BBC
Year 1 – Phonics
Our Year 1 children have been very busy practising their phonics skills ahead of the Phonic Screening Check in June.
The Phonic Screening Check is a statutory assessment that all children in Year 1 across the country complete. They work with a familiar adult to read 40 words, 20 of which are real words and 20 of which are made-up ‘alien’ words. The children do not realise they are taking a test and they will have many opportunities to practise in the upcoming weeks. If your child is in Year 1, please make sure you are reading with them at home every day as this will really help them to achieve their best!
Further information about the Phonic Screening Check can be found in the document below.
Phonic Screening Check for Parents
Information about how we teach children to read using our phonics scheme, Little Wandle, can be found here.
Nursery 2026-2027
We are very much looking forward to our new Nursery children joining us in September!
If your child was born between September 2022 and August 2023, they are able to join our Nursery in September. Our Nursery gets the children off to the best possible start to their educational journey and supports them to get ready for Reception. Please ask for an application form from the office to secure a space.
Makaton
As a school, we are learning Makaton as another method of communication. Makaton is a communication programme that uses signs, symbols, and speech to help people communicate effectively, especially those with speech or language difficulties.
Here are the signs we have been learning this week. Scan the QR codes for further information!
Have a lovely weekend!
