26 Jun Oak Class – Attention Autism
This week during our Attention Autism sessions, Oak Class explored using flour to discover the shapes and patterns our hands can make. The children enjoyed sprinkling flour onto black card and pressing their hands into it to create clear hand prints. They watched with excitement as different movements made different marks, including prints, lines, swirls and finger trails. The contrast between the white flour and black background helped the children clearly see the shapes they were creating.
The sensory activity encouraged curiosity, exploration and engagement while supporting the development of fine motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination. The children practised taking turns, following instructions and maintaining attention throughout the session. We also introduced descriptive language such as shape, pattern, print and trace as the children talked about their creations. It was wonderful to see everyone so focused and enthusiastic as they experimented and discovered the many different effects they could make using flour and their hands.
